Experience shows that in the transport industry, a wide range of materials are used in the adhesion process, which differ from one company to another. We sometimes find that there is some reserve about switching to an adhesive or sealant or a new adhesive or sealant, because people are afraid that this will put the production process at risk. This is why SABA started up 'custom' bonding tests. At SABA, we perform more than 200 detailed bonding tests for clients every year. The advantage of such a test is that it leads to personalised advice for the customers, geared to their own, unique production processes. In many cases, it is possible to work with less or even no pre-treatment.

'The customer request is received via our technical sales staff, often together with materials from the customer's production process. Together with product management, we look specifically at which sealants, adhesives and pre-treatment products will be included in the test. The tests are then conducted at SABA's Research & Development department at the head office in Dinxperlo. The customer receives an official study report with an overview of all test results and a personal advisory interview. Without any costs being involved for this.'

The chosen test method depends on the load to which the adhesive bond is exposed. In demanding conditions, such as bonding a window in a high speed train that carries people in all kinds of weather, more demanding test conditions are needed. To seal the inside of a horse trailer, you can image that less extreme tests will suffice. In addition to loads, specific standards play a role in the test process, such as DVS 1618 and DIN 6701 for the rail sector and DIN 2304 for the general industry.

3 tips from Gerrit

TIP 1:

Think of the correct dimensions of the adhesive layer. In order to use the elasticity of an MS Polymer adhesive, a minimum layer thickness of 2 to 3 mm is necessary. The correct application of adhesive in the overall construction therefore forms an important parameter for a sustainable bond.

TIP 2:

Make sure that the material to be bonded is of constant quality. This guarantees you a safe and constant bonding process for the future. Imagine that you switch to a cheaper, alternative material to save costs without testing the adhesive bond. This can lead to unexpected costs or claims afterwards. SABA regularly conducts tests for customers who are applying new materials in their production process, or as a regular check.

TIP 3:

A coating or paint can have a strong effect on the bonding of the adhesive. Despite his years of experience, Gerrit regularly comes up against surprises. He recommends always contacting SABA for specific advice with materials with a coating or paint.
