Polysulfide as elastic and chemically resistant sealing technology

Polysulfide-based sealing products provide for an elastic, durable and chemically resistant connection. This combination of properties makes the technology unique. Polysulfide products are generally used in applications where there is movement and where petrochemical and/or chemical substances are used. They prevent soil contamination and are characterized by their reliable and long-lasting results.

What are polysulfide sealants?

Polysulfide sealants are polysulfide polymer-based products that consist of sulfur compounds. This results in unique properties, such as excellent flexibility, even at low temperatures, and excellent resistance to various chemicals.

SABA is one of the first companies that managed to incorporate polysulfides into sealants for sealing glazing. Starting in the seventies, when protecting groundwater against contamination at filling stations, for example, became a high priority agenda item, polysulfide-based products were added to SABA’s chemically resistant product range to prevent soil pollution. Many filling stations are still protected by our sealants.

SABA’s polysulfide products are available in 2-component versions. 2-component polysulfide sealants start to cure when a chemical reaction is created by mixing the two components. This guarantees relatively fast curing, independent of weather conditions.

The benefits of polysulfide sealants

Polysulfide sealants are characterized by their extremely long service life and excellent bonding. Because they are highly water vapor-tight, they are used for sealing insulating glass to prevent the formation of condensation. However, polysulfide-based sealants offer other benefits as well:

Chemically resistant

At locations where hazardous substances are used, preventing soil contamination is essential. For example at filling stations, chemical plants and emergency reservoirs. Polysulfide sealants are the perfect solution in these situations due to their high chemical resistance. This technology is resistant to many different chemical substances, such as fuels, solvents, and strong acids and bases.

Durable flexibility

A unique property of polysulfide technology is its high degree of long-lasting flexibility. Especially where seals are subject to structural movements, they must move in tandem with such movements. Areas where seals are subject to structural movements for example include car lanes, airports and parking decks.

Liquid-tight

Polysulfide-based sealants are highly resistant to the action of liquids and gases. A polysulfide-based seal provides for a reliable, liquid-tight and chemically resistant seal. This makes it highly suitable for use in areas where hydrocarbons, such as fuels, are used.

UV and weather resistant

Polysulfide sealants are known for their excellent weather resistance. They are less sensitive to moisture and will still harden even when they come into contact with precipitation during the curing process. That makes polysulfide-based sealants ideal for outdoor applications.

Polysulfide-based sealants - applications

SABA’s polysulfide products are primarily applied in projects that involve the use or storage of chemical/petrochemical substances and/or where there is much structural movement. Due to their chemically resistant, flexible and liquid-resistant properties, they excel in these applications. Examples of these applications include:

SABA’s polysulfide products

For more than 60 years, SABA’s polysulfide sealants have proven their value under the most diverse and extreme conditions. That makes the SABA polysulfide concept one of the most durable sealing systems in the world. It contributes to protecting the environment and provides for lower costs due to the low 25-year reference period.

SABA’s polysulfide-based sealants are characterized by the very low presence of hazardous substances. They are safe to work with and are very easy to use. Almost all of our polysulfide products are certified and are regularly tested for bonding, strength and resilience. We also conduct such tests for our customers.
