The road towards circular mattress design

In a circular economy, products at their end of life are transformed back into valuable raw materials to create new high value products, eliminating waste. Not only do we believe that a circular system is the future of foam bonding, we think it has to be. Because people are becoming increasingly mindful about the impact their purchases have on the planet, it means rethinking how we design our products for their next use phase. These products also include mattresses. In order to create a truly circular mattress market, which has a real impact on linear waste reduction globally, we seek to take a holistic approach in combining comfort, durability and circularity into a total design. To do so we need innovation and collaboration in our industry.

The function of adhesives

SABA adhesives play a critical function in mattress assembly and can play a key role in the design of a circular mattress. Our adhesives provide flexibility in product design ensuring the comfort demands of consumers are not sacrificed in the quest for circularity. Further, SABA adhesives increase product life span and durability which in turn supports the reduction of waste.

Recycling End of Life mattresses

Our adhesives do not disturb chemical recycling processes. Chemical recycling processes, such as pyrolysis, are intended to valorize post-consumer foam into new polyols which could potentially be used to make a new mattress. Pilot results show that SABA adhesives do not disturb such chemical recycling processes, independent of the type of substrate being chemically recycled, nor do our adhesives interfere with the production process of new foam with rewon polyols.

Circular mattress design

We support our customers with circularity by design by matching our adhesive formulation to the mattress design. For example, if the design goal is constructing a mattress of circularity supporting components, we can support this initiative via our current adhesive portfolio or new developments. Since SABA adhesives do not disrupt chemical recycling, a wide variety of design options become available.
