How to use hot melt adhesives and optimize your mattress manufacturing process [Whitepaper]

Do you want to integrate hot melt adhesives into your mattress manufacturing process? We will guide you through all steps you have to take. The main benefit of hot melt adhesives is that it provides a strong bond without the evaporation of solvents or water, which makes a fast assembly and processing possible. The result is minimal dry time and immediate packing of finished goods. But how do you integrate hot melt adhesives perfectly into your production process? Read all about it in our whitepaper.

The components of hot melt adhesives

Hot melt adhesives consist primarily of three components:

  • a polymer
  • an adhesive resin
  • a wax or oil
A polymer forms the backbone of the adhesive and gives the hot melt its strength and flexibility. These properties are largely determined by the type of polymer, the molecular weight and the volume. A high polymer content creates high viscosity and flexibility. A lower polymer content means less viscosity. Polymers often used for hot melt adhesives include TR, EVA, APAO, PUR and PA. Sometimes, other additives are added in order to influence specific properties. For example, oil or wax are used to adjust the viscosity and open time. Resins provide for the initial tack and bonding.

Application of hot melt adhesives in mattres manufacturing

The production process for mattresses can involve various bonding processes and materials. In the mattress industry, an adhesive must bond foam to foam, for instance, or foam to ticking or non-woven materials to pocket springs. This calls for different methods of applying adhesives. Hot melt adhesives are usually applied in one of four ways:

  1. Beads
  2. Swirl
  3. Spray
  4. Roller

The advantages of hot melt adhesives

Hot melt adhesives have a number of important advantages, including:

  • High initial tack
  • Rapid curing
  • Suitable for porous substrates
  • No drying or curing necessary: immediate packing of finished goods
  • Solvent-free; better for the environment and human health
  • Bonding process that is simple to automate
